Q: So what is all this fuss about emu oil?

For centuries, the aborigines of Australia have been applying Emu oil to their wounds with excellent results.

Today we find more of this natural ingredient being added to products worldwide to increase their effectiveness. It is found in pain relief creams for athletes, skin care products, and natural soaps.

Q:  Isn't this an animal and how do you get the oil? Squeeze it??

An emu (Dromiceius novaehol-landiae) is a flightless, gray-feathered ratite bird of Australia, closely related to the ostrich. The oil comes from a thick pad of fat on the back of the bird that was initially provided by nature to protect the animal from the extreme temperatures of its Australian homeland.

Q:  Do you have to kill the bird to get the oil?

Unfortunately, yes. The emu is farm-raised as an alternative to red meat, much as the ostrich is raised. A comment from the farmers is that this is a much better behaved bird than the ostrich. All parts of the bird are used in many industries and applications. This makes the oil a sustainable natural resource.

Scientifically and anecdotally these benefits and uses have been named:

• skin regenerative properties due to it's being high in oleic acid (oleic acid has better skin-penetrating qualities than vegetable oils),

When my customers say, "But I have sensitive skin" or "I have eczema" I always tell them about the benefits of emu oil. This is the only true transdermal oil that I am aware of. It has been tested extensively. The molecular structure is smaller than the epidermal cells of our skin, allowing the oil to penetrate the underlying tissues.
